My Little Dream Box with Giveaway

Apr 15 MLB ContentsMy favourite monthly box arrived recently; My Little Box.  This month the theme is Dreaming and the artwork on the box is so pretty I am already using the empty box for keepsakes as we tidy the house.

I love the artwork of the My Little boxes along with the style of the My Little Beauty products, from the Geek Box, to the Superhero Box (ok, that’s not a huge leap) to the Dream Box, each one inspires my imagination and leaves me with a smile.

While the box itself is beautiful enough, the contents is also wonderful and all so pretty!

My Little Beauty – Repairing Mask for Dry Ends

Probably the least exciting product from my point of view.  I have very short hair, practically a pixie-cut, so my ends are not sufficiently far from my roots to ever get dry.  I’ll be happy to offer this one up as a giveaway for anyone (UK) who fancies dropping me a line.

Apr 15 MLB PerfumeSabé Masson – Le Soft Perfume in Copacabana

For many years I didn’t wear perfumes.  My skin is quite sensitive and the alcohol in most perfume sprays makes my skin itch.  Solid perfumes would seem to be the perfect answer to this problem.  A couple of colleagues, on agreeing to sniff me, declared this perfume to be pleasant but it just doesn’t quite tick my boxes.

Apr 15 MLB LipsLou Lesage – Loved By in Baume Rouge Velour

This lovely lip balm is just the right intensity for me to apply without worrying about needing a mirror.  The colour adapts easily to my lips and the texture is smooth and moisturising.  This little pot has taken up residence in my bag.

Apr 15 MLB StampLifestyle extra – Stamp and pad

A cute little scrolling stamp with 12 settings including stars; clouds and a number of English and French phrases.  This would be wonderful for letter writing; card making and (my favourite) organisational procrastination.  With gems such as “Today I”; “To Do”; “Idée géniale” and Oui and Non tick boxes I could spend hours planning what I should have been getting on with!

Apr 15 MLB NecklaceDelphine Pariente – Bonne Etoile pendant

The final item is this charming little pendant on a very long cord.  It’s pretty enough and feels a little like a lucky penny when I wear it.

This is a lovely selection in a box which has led me to have high expectations.  Everything in the April box is really good, even though some of it just isn’t for me.

Apr 15 MLB MagazineI’d love to tell you all about the magazine.  It seems to be a large fold-out sheet of paper, which makes it a little awkward to read at my desk.  I took this home with the intention of reading it in the lounge, maybe getting a couple of shots of the interior but it has vanished in the above mentioned house tidy.  I know things are meant to be found rather than lost when a house gets tidied – welcome to my world!

Speaking of which, if you would like me to pop the hair mask in the post to you, leave a comment telling me what your current dream is.

Keep dreaming,

April Glossy Box with Giveaway

GB Apr15 MarilynHi guys,

I know I haven’t written anything for you for ages so here’s a little something to keep you going.

Last week I got my April Glossy Box and it is pretty!  It is the Iconic Hollywood Edition, inspired by Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.  I do love Marilyn Monroe but I adore Audrey Hepburn!

So, what’s in the box?

GB Apr15 RibbonGB Apr15 Cards
The staples this month are a Lord and Berry Lipstick Pencil in Kiss, “the perfect Marilyn red” and a POP Beauty Kajal Eyeliner Pen with which to create “Elizabeth Taylor’s iconic cat eye”.  These two set the theme, although I’ve heard Marilyn’s “perfect red” was actually five different lipsticks and glosses with which to achieve her signature pout.

GB Apr15 Contents

Lord & Berry – Lipstick Pencil in KissGB Apr15 Lip

This seems like a perfectly good place to start.  I love lipstick pencils.  I have a very defined cupids bow and it’s much easier to line with a pencil than with a normal lipstick, gloss or tint.  I do have a number of “perfect” reds though and, while red does suit me, I seldom seem to have the opportunity to wear it.  Maybe I should take to popping some on before I go out for a run?

POP Beauty – Kajal Eyeliner PenGB Apr15 Eye

It’s a khol pencil.  It’s black.  It has a smudger on the other end, which is nice.  I’ll put it in my drawer with my other khol pencils.  I’d love to give you a more in depth review of this but I’m very aware of the short shelf life of eye makeup once it’s been opened so I’m going to hold off on opening this one until I’ve used up one of my others.

GB Apr15 Face 2Darphin – Exquisage Beauty Revealing Cream

This soft and very lightly fragranced cream offers to replenish, enhance firmness and boost luminosity to produce a red carpet glow.  Strengthening probiotics are also there to soften lines and wrinkles.  I like this cream; it leaves my skin feeling softer and looking smoother and the subtle scent doesn’t distract me.  There’s also an offer of free samples when purchasing the full size from their website.

GB Apr15 HandsNougat London – Nurturing Hand Cream

This cream is lovely!  Maybe not quite as lovely as my l’Occitane en Provence Delightfully Rose, but certainly lovely to the point that I’ve moved it between so many bags over the last week that I’ve now lost it!  It’s fairly rich, pleasantly scented and leaves my hands feeling softer and more moisturised.  Perfect.

GB Apr15 NailsColor Club – Barely There Nail Polish

I’m sorry, I’m sure it’s a lovely nail varnish, but I just don’t do this colour.  I’ve tried it a few times, when nude nail varnishes come my way, but I just hate it and end up either removing or painting over it in record time.

I’m sure you are all keen to know what I’m giving away and how to get your hands on it?  It’s the Color Club Barely There Nail Polish!  Honestly I’m not going to use it so I may as well give it away to a good home.

Drop me a comment please, with your name and why you like nude nail polishes.  That’s all!  One lucky reader (I think that’s all I have) will get this oh-so-beige beauty through the post (smothered in bubble wrap, don’t worry), I’ll even throw in a So Susan Flutter Mascara which is a perfectly good mascara but I already have one, along with so many others.

Thank you for reading.

My Little Box, March 2015

My Little March Box Contents

My favourite monthly box has arrived! The March edition – My Little Superbox – is here to bring a smile to my face.  With the box itself extolling me to make myself epic, there is a sheet of stickers with illustrations by the in-house artist along with slogans such as “What would Wonder Woman do?”

I Believe I Can Fly

I can’t imagine a world in which I wouldn’t go straight for the intriguing roll marked “Every Girl is a Superhero” which turned out to be this t-shirt! It is marked as one size but I’m not sure it would for anyone over a UK size 14. With a wide neck, short sleeves and thin fabric this is perfect for throwing over a swim suit or bikini in summer to protect your shoulders or to slob about in of an evening if the house is warm enough (as I am now).  Turns out it was perfect for wearing when I went indoor skydiving on Saturday too!

Night Cream

There is a 50ml tub of Miracle Sleeping Cream from Garnier Skin Naturals range. This claims to combat signs of fatigue and aging by diffusing hydrating ingredients as you sleep, leaving your skin looking rehydrated, refreshed and illuminated. I have long been after a good night cream for my face and this pot is plenty large enough to thoroughly road test.

Crystaliste Conditioner

Next is Lait Cristal by Kérastase from l’Oreal Paris. It’s a Luminous Perfecting Conditioner designed to turn hair with dry lengths and ends into Free-Flowing Silky hair. I’m not sure I like the idea of having to towel-dry my hair before I condition then rinse my hair only to have to dry it again but it’s not my problem as dry hair is not something I suffer from. I may have to pass this on to someone else to try.

My Little Lip Balm

I have so many lip balms littered around the house! At some point I need to get them all together and decide which ones I want to keep. Out of my three Burt’s Bees balms, the pomegranate one is going, possibly the beeswax one too (I didn’t notice it was peppermint when I bought it). This is a keeper through! From My Little Beauty comes their Stick Lèvres Nourrissant, the “perfect nourishing balm for your lips”. Sweet almond oil and Shea butter combine into a smooth, mild scent and super-soft lips.

Keep Calm and Call Wonder Woman

The magazine is an engaging blend of eye-catching photos; interviews; articles; problem pages; recipes and makeup tricks. This month there are also super-cute mini bios of all our favourite super-ladies

My Little March Box

Value-wise, the goodies approach £60, giving excellent value for money, if you include the t-shirt and stickers. Without them, the generous night cream, lip balm and sample sized conditioner still top £25 meaning that even if you don’t appreciate the lifestyle extras you so get good value for money.

What is your favourite subscription box? Can you recommend a night cream for me to try?

February Birchbox

I do love getting my new Birch Box.  I tried to resist renewing after a year of receiving them and managed to resist December’s box, but January looked just too tempting and now it’s February!

February Birchbox

I’m kicking myself a little about my photos as I forgot to get my big group shot and now the box is all broken up.  Two bits are in my work bag; two are on my dresser at home and I’ve eaten the other one!

In the interests of ending on a high I’m going to start on a low.

Oats + Chia – Mixed Berry

Oats and ChiaIt’s not a good start that I’m not keen on berries, really.  I ate this two days ago for breakfast.  The oats were ok, the berries were very sharp, I’m still picking chia seeds from between my teeth and there are as many Weight Watchers points in this made with water as there are in a sachet of porridge made with milk.  Sorry, I wasn’t impressed.

TheBalm StainiacThe Balm Stainiac

I just don’t understand lipstains.  They feel dry and unnatural while offering uneven and poor colour.  This could be how I’m using them, I suppose, but I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

Liz Earle – Botanical Shine ShampooBotanical Shine Shampoo

I was a slow starter when it came to Liz Earle but I’m getting to love the Hot Cloth Cleanser which I keep in my work locker and use before I go into the shower.  I’m looking forward to seeing what the shampoo does, although I would have preferred to receive the conditioner too so I could test them both together.  This could be one for the work locker.

Bath Salt Scrub

London Butterflies – Bath Salt Scrub

I have yet to try this – with cycling to work and swimming at weekends I’m more of a shower person, although I love the idea of a relaxing bath.  I’ve had a number of exfoliants recently though so I’m not sure how soon I’m going to be able to try this one.

Wild About Beauty – Rose Water Illuminating SerumIlluminating Serum

This one made it into my work bag, which is always a good sign.  I was expecting to have to squeeze the pretty tube but there’s a pump at the end – is this the best of both worlds?  The serum is off-white with an iridescent pink sheen to it which is slightly hypnotic.  The light formula blurs fine lines, almost like a primer, but feels just slightly tacky on my skin; not a problem under makeup but slightly disconcerting when I test it on the back of my hand.

Silver EyelinerCynthia Rowley – Eyeliner in silver

I’ve seen quite a few posts recently about paler eyeliners so was delighted to see this in my box.  A basic application on my upper lid put a twinkle in my eye, so I’m looking forward to seeing what else I can do with this.

It’s a bit of a mixed bag for February.  As I’ve seen other people comment, there doesn’t seem to be any theme running through this box; it’s all a little random.  I’ve also noticed that, where issues raised with Birchbox on Instagram have been answered promptly in previous months, there’s a lack of response to comments this month.

With other subscription services vying for my business (I adore My Little Box and seem to have subscribed to Glossybox – look for their reviews over the next week) I’m not sure how long I’m going to continue with Birchbox.

What do you think of my box this month?  Do you receive Birchbox too?  What did you get?  What did you think of the Oats?

Burt’s Bees and So Susan

I went into Waitrose the other evening with my little boys.  They don’t like going to the supermarket and I only ever take them in the evenings if they’ve been naughty or if we’re desperate for something.  We were running low on toilet roll (and they’d been cheeky to staff at school)…  Being on a highly restrictive diet, I was looking for a distraction to stop me from being magnetically attracted to the patisserie counter.  Cue the bath and body aisle!

To be fair, I have long been looking for some kind of serum or cream to miraculously transform my nails from ratty and splitting to smooth and nourished.  I browsed through the aisle of luxury names until my eye fell on the Burt’s Bees range.  I’ve heard good things about their lip balm and one more lip balm never hurts, does it?  I picked up the honey lip balm and put it in my basket.  As I glanced up, my eye was caught by a pretty metal tin with a picture of a lemon on it: Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream.  Could this be the answer?  I added this to my basket and it was as I was looking down that I saw this:

Tips and Toes

The lip balm was different but there was still one in there.  There was also the cuticle cream: a smaller tin but when do I ever finish anything anyway?  I totted up the price in my mind and the kit was only around £3 more expensive for an additional 4 items.

So how did I get on with everything?IMG_2367

Almond & Milk Hand Cream:

This stuff is quite lush and smells like a whole family of almonds having a bath in clotted cream.  It’s a really thick cream to spread across the skin of your hands when you have plenty of time to rub it in.

Hand Salve

Hand salve:

This is is a solid waxy balm with a strong lavender scent which melts ever so slightly under my finger.  I have been using it across my knuckles where my skin is prone to cracking with the cold and so far the results are excellent.
Replenishing Lip Balm:
(with pomegranate oil)
Replenishing Lip Balm
As I said, many people have raved about these lip balms.  I don’t know if it’s the pomegranate oil or one of the other “replenishing” ingredients but I don’t like the flavour of this.  It tastes a little artificial although my boyfriend assures me it has a pleasant tint to it.  As a balm it’s fairly average.Hand and Foot Creams

Honey & Grapeseed Hand Cream:

This hand cream smells divine!  I love the waft of honey as I rub it into my hands.  The texture is not bad, although I prefer my hand creams to be a little thicker and my fingertips are left feeling just slightly greasy.  It’s probably my third favourite hand cream, after l’Occitaine en Provence and the Almond and Milk hand cream above.

Coconut Foot Cream:

I’m disinclined to write much about this one on the basis of “if you don’t have anything nice to say…”  It smells lovely and there was a nice, chilly tingle of mint when I applied it to my feet but the chilly tingle didn’t go away for ages and the cream was slimy and just didn’t rub in.  It was still slimy the next morning when I got up!  I have almost an entire tube left if anyone would like it…?

Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream

Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream:

Finally, we have the reason I bought the set in the first place.  This product did not disappoint!  It smells like lemons and limes tangoing across my nails in a snowstorm of zest!  My finger nails were so much improved after just two days that I did this:

So Susan Amethyst

 So Susan: Amethyst:

Quite possibly my favourite nail varnish at the moment (but only because glitter is so hard to remove).  This shot was after one clear basecoat and one (ONE!) coat of Amethyst.  If I’d had time I would have applied a second coat and a topcoat, but still, wow!

Small criticism: there is something badly wrong with the brush; half of the fibres are shorter than the rest, as if this brush was made from the scruffy ends of the bundle.

So what are you putting on your hands at the moment?

My Little Box, December 2014

My Little Box

Today I received my December box from My Little Box.  While I have started cancelling some of my beauty boxes due to a bulging cosmetics drawer, this box is always a delight to receive with its emphasis on chic and usually French lifestyle items along with a handful of beauty pieces and a small magazine with fashion; beauty tips and other interesting articles.  This month is certainly no exception to the chic and delightful trend and the articles include quirky gift-wrapping ideas, a couple of pretty little desert recipes and how to do smoky eyes in three minutes.

Full Box 1

The whole box just looks beautiful as a whole. Flashes of colour lighting up the backdrop of black, white and baby pink.

Gift Wrap KitThe first thing I couldn’t wait to unwrap (with my stationery fetish) was the black and white string on the manila envelope marked “masking tape”.  The masking tape was actually a set of ten decorated sticky labels with different shapes cut into them: wide strips; narrow strips and dots around a centimetre across.  These go perfectly with the quirky gift tags and wonderful twine.

Head Band

The other “lifestyle item” was a knitted headband which, considering I’m wearing it right now to keep my hair out of my eyes as I type, is wonderfully comfortable.

Lipstick ClosedLipstick open
Next came the lipstick.  I was skeptical of the title “Your One and Only Red”, claiming that this red suits any colouring.  I have skin colouring which I describe as Simpson Yellow so “A vibrant red with a hint of pink” didn’t initially inspire me with confidence but, heading to the mirror in the ladies at lunchtime, I found that the colour is very sheer and did make my lips look plump and glossy, so maybe…  I have to say, I do love the pink, spotty cardboard tube.

LOccitane Creme Precieuse ImmortelleThen we have a 15ml pot of cream from L’Occitaine en Provence.  The cream is very thick and rich with a subtle floral scent and claims a triple action to make your skin “appear younger, firmer and smoother, like never seen before”.  I waited a long time to acquire my first tube of L’Occitaine cream which I purchased in conjunction with a glossy magazine, followed swiftly by my second tube attached to another copy of the same magazine (in my defense, the magazine cost half as much as the cream would have if bought from the official website).  I shall definitely be using this on a regular basis.

Wild Cow Invigorating Body LotionFinally we have the wild card.  This is a 100ml bottle of Wild Cow Invigorating Body Lotion from Cowshed which, as the card points out, is British.  Not one to hold nationality against people (or body lotions), I’ll happily try this one out too.  The scent can really only be described as Invigorating, although Zingy might get a look in too, due to the essential oils of lemongrass, ginger and rosemary.  This definitely looks like one to use on a cold morning when getting out and about requires that little bit more effort.

Full Box 2My verdict is that this is a beautiful box, wonderfully curated and presented with some delightfully winter and even Christmas themed contents without any cliches.

Thank you,
